Stübben Care - How to clean your tack.

Care Instructions

Our Stübben Leather

Each animal hide is unique in its character based on species, race and life story. Through the tanning process these character features are even highlighted. Our metal free and vegetable tanned leathers radiate elegance and warmth. The natural structure, pore pattern, folds and scards remain visible.

Our Leather is exclusively crafted for Stübben. It is robust yet smooth and supple in use. Through refining the material during the tanning process our leather gets its typical grippy surface. Durability, insesitivity to sweat and a pleasant thermal behaviour are additional outstandig features of Stübben Leather. Further Stübben Leather is extremely skin- and environmentally friendly.

Step 1: Cleaning

Use a moist cloth or sponge and our Stübben saddle soap to clean your tack. The PH neutral soap has been developed in cooperation with our tanneries to specifically clean our high quality Stübben Leather. Consequently our saddle soap is the ideal solution for the long term performance of our leather.

In case you own a Stübben Custom saddle, please only carefully clean the colorful leather applications. Heavy cleaning might lead to fading of the color.

Frequency of cleaning: regularly after usage

Step 2: Conditioning

In order to sustain the suppleness and grip of our Stübben Leather it is important to groom the leather products with our quality conditioner "Hamanol". Hamanol is also best applied with a moist cloth and not to thick. After being fully absorbed polish the leather with a wool cloth. Done!

Frequency of conditioning: NOT after every use - ca. 1 time per week

Lambswool products

Pads for Equi-Soft® girth and stud girth

The lambswool pads for the Equi-Soft® girth and stud girth are crafted from genuine, natural lambswool. Breathable and hypoallergenic, this high-quality material is not only gentle for the horse’s skin but also very comfortable as it absorbs shocks very well.

To guarantee the durability of the lambswool, it is important to care for it on a regular basis. Not only are the pads washable, but washing them regularly will actually help the lambswool keep its benefits over the years. By washing away the dirt, dust, sand, and sweat, it will remain soft and beautiful, even with intensive use.

How often should you wash your pad?

We recommend washing your pad regularly, depending on the frequency of use and the amount of sweat. For regular use (2-3 times per week), it should be washed once every two weeks. If the lambskin becomes soaked in sweat, it should also be washed after use, as the ammonia from the horse’s sweat can seriously damage it.

Since lambswool is able to absorb moisture very efficiently, the pad should only be used if it has had time to dry entirely after the last ride. This helps the lambswool maintain its breathability. If you notice that the pad does not have time to fully dry between your rides, having several units of the same product and switching between them is a good solution.

Step 1: washing

The pad should be washed in the washing machine, as it is much more effective than washing it by hand. Use a normal spin cycle, ideally at 30°C and with the “extra water” option or with adding 3 to 4 litres of water around 10 minutes after the start of the program through the detergent drawer. We recommend the Mattes special detergent MELP, as it not only cares for the lambswool, but also for the lambskin. Do not use fabric softener or bleach. Do not overload the machine.

Step 2: drying

The pad should be removed from the washing machine directly at the end of the cycle. It can be dried in the tumble dryer as long as it is set to a cold or cool setting (max 30°C). It can also be air-dried in the shade. Never expose the pad to direct heat (such as a heater) or bright sunlight.

Storing your pad

Do not store the pad in a plastic bag. It should be stored in a dry, shaded location. If you know you will not use it for some time, wash it and wait until it is completely dry before storing it. We recommend using moth repellent when storing your pad.
